Former Edinburgh man Nathan Chamberlain started at 10 for the exiles and kicked a first half conversion to open his account. His fall from grace has always seemed a little baffling. On the back of a composed performance against Connacht in 2021 where he was the standout Edinburgh player on the night, including scoring a match winning try at the death, I thought his future with Edinburgh was assured but alas no. There are however some interesting facets to consider. The last time we played Scottish was in a pre-season friendly in season 2018-2019. Nick Haining made his debut for Edinburgh and got on the scoresheet. Ewan Ashman, on loan from Sale Sharks helping to cover for the world cup also featured and scored a try but then never played a competitive game for Edinburgh as Mike Willemse, Cammy Fenton and Dave Cherry were in front of him. I reckon I'd have picked him even then ahead of at least two of those names. A shame we didn’t get to keep hold of him because he has developed into a fantastic hooker with 11 tries to his name in all matches last year for Sale and Scotland. A couple of other debutants that day were Connor Boyle, whatever happened to him? And Jack Blain who made a try scoring debut as a second half substitute.
Right off the bat this should be a completely straightforward dress rehearsal kind of game. London Scottish are literally and figuratively not in the same league. I understand the need for this kind of shakedown friendly but it’s hardly glamorous. Of course when the glamour opposition for the actual grand opening of the DAM was Newcastle Falcons, who we’ve played 10 times (8 pre-season, 2 in europe) in the last 11 years, I don’t think we should be surprised.

Blain seems to have slipped off the radar a little with only 5 appearances last season. Difficult with the likes of Boffelli, Moyano, Hoyland and Graham in your way and although Moyano has left Wes Goosen may step right into that void. So he needs to take advantage of this latest opportunity. He’s got more rugby in him than Owsley and I'm betting he’s every bit as quick. Here’s the highlights of that 57-21 victory. Our opponents have already played a pre-season fixture losing 19-66 to Harlequins at the Richmond Athletic Ground.
